Kupu (word) is an (award winning) app that has been developed by Spark NZ (are they still called this?) to help in the Te reo journey. It is a pretty simple concept that could be a game changer for lots of te reo learners. It is simple- take a photo of the image that is in front of you (with your phone) and the app will give you the word in Māori (instantly).

This could be a really fun activity with your own ākonga in class or just to help you build your own vocabulary around things that you are interested in in your own context and daily life.

Take a photo of a lemon. Take a photo of a shoe. Take a photo of a fork, a leaf, a duck or a kettle. You can learn the Māori kupu and tuck this away in the kete as part of the learning journey. I like the fact it is immediate, personal and just another tool that some learners will enjoy. It might not be your thing- but for others it could be just the thing that they need right now.

Titiro atu, e hoa ma.
